A 3M manufacturing co-ordinator has been recognised with an honour from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for her dedication to the health and safety of her colleagues.
Cheryl Lambert, who works at the diversified technology company’s UK centre for healthcare products in Loughborough, has won a RoSPA Guardian Angel Award. The accolade celebrates individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the safety of others.
Cheryl was nominated for the award after actively promoting safety in her workplace for the past decade. One of her most recent achievements was introducing a programme which encourages open discussions about health and safety in the workplace.
As part of the initiative, employees are asked to write any potential hazards they see on a red card and any examples of best practice on a green card. These are then displayed on noticeboards around the production site so everyone can be made aware of the points raised.
Cheryl is always striving to find ways to improve the safety of others and developed this idea when looking at how to enhance the previous ‘observation and feedback’ process, which requires employees to submit safety conversations onto a database.
The behavioural safety programme has been running for around 18 months and was initially trialled in Cheryl’s department but, due to its success, has now been rolled out to nearly 200 employees in total.
She said: “We have had such a great response to the programme and the workforce has really got behind it. By having the cards on display it makes people more aware of the risks they could face and gets people discussing them.”
Cheryl attended a RoSPA awards ceremony at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham on July 15 to collect her prize.
