81% of manufacturing industry workers say workplace is a health hazard
Unsafe working conditions among British manufacturers are putting the health of its workers in serious danger, a new report has revealed.

A study from commissioned by Hayward Baker found 81% of workers from the manufacturing industry claim their workplace to be a health hazard

Half of the factory workers surveyed said they had suffered an injury at work and almost a third reported having been hospitalised due to a work-related illness or injury.

The research identifies that the average employee in the manufacturing industry has had three accidents at work, with two of those having happened in the last year.

Findings show that 24% of workers sustained their injuries because of slippery floors or stairs, 16% blame obstructions and 11% say cluttered floors were the cause.

24% said handling large, heavy items incorrectly and without the right equipment contributed to their injury, whilst defective equipment counted towards 13% percent of reported workplace injuries among employees.

10% of survey participants also said they were provided with unsatisfactory tools to carry out their job, and more than one in 10 said they had not had a risk assessment to carry out their job.

More than half of those employed by manufacturers polled have regularly complained to their bosses about the state of their place of work, with a further 25% saying their manager did nothing to rectify the situation.

A spokesperson for Hayward Baker, said: “Going to work could seriously damage the health of employees that work in a manufacturing environment if their managers fail to take working conditions seriously enough.
