RNLI to provide Bank Holiday lifeguard cover at Camber Sands
The RNLI will provide a temporary lifeguard service at Camber Sands this Bank Holiday, after Wednesday’s tragic events.

Five men on a day trip from London died at the East Sussex beach on Wednesday, after failing to realise how quickly the tide would come in.

Three of the men, in their late teens and early 20s, were pulled from the sea late Wednesday afternoon, with two more found later in the evening.

Emergency services were called to the beach at 2.10pm after reports of a person in the sea.

While they were on scene another person was seen in difficulty at 2.20pm and 15 minutes later a third person was rescued.

All five men, despite the efforts to save them, died at the scene.

Chief Superintendent Di Roskilly, Sussex Police said: "This has been an incredibly tragic incident and we are offering their next of kin support at this difficult time and our thoughts are with them.

"We have no further reports of anyone else missing from Camber and there are no on-going searches related to this incident.”

Following the event the RNLI are working with Rother District Council to reassure the public.

A temporary RNLI lifeguard service, of 5-6 personnel, will work alongside the existing local authority on the beach this Bank Holiday weekend.

The charity has said they will man the beach from 9am-6pm across the weekend alongside the Local Authority Beach Patrol teams.

There will also be other RNLI staff on hand to provide safety information to visitors at the beach.

The RNLI currently provides lifeguard cover on over 240 beaches throughout the UK.

The charity are urging people to check out their website before visiting the coast.
