Man killed working on Waterloo Travelator

An engineer has died while working on a moving walkway at Waterloo station in London.

The man was pronounced dead in the early hours of Wednesday morning (02:20BST) by paramedics called to the scene.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are investigating the death, which is being treated as unexplained.

BTP said in a statement: "Officers were called just after 2.20am this morning to London Waterloo Underground Station following reports that a contract worker had received an injury.

"London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade were already on scene and it became apparent the incident was more serious.

"Lifesaving attempts were very sadly unsuccessful and a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the man and inform his family. Enquiries into the incident continue."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been told that an urgent investigation is underway.
