Biffa receives prestigious health and safety award

National recycling and waste management provider, Biffa has been awarded with the Sword of Honour for health and safety excellence – a prestigious honour presented by the British Safety Council.

Biffa is one of just 56 organisations worldwide that have achieved this accolade in health and safety.

As the waste industry is often reported as one of the most dangerous industries to work in, becoming the first company in the sector to receive such an important health and safety award is an incredible achievement.

To compete for the Sword of Honour, organisations must have achieved the maximum rating of five starts in the British Safety Council’s integrated health, safety and environment management assessment. They must also have demonstrated a culture of best practice in health and safety throughout the business, from the boardroom to the shop floor, to an independent panel of judges.
Organisations who are successful are then recognised as having commendable health and safety systems that are among the best in the world.

Clare Odd, Group Health, Safety and Quality Manager for Biffa said: “We’re incredibly proud of this prestigious award. The Sword of Honour confirms that Biffa’s health, safety and environmental (HSE) performance is built on exemplar systems and processes, supported by highly engaged teams that are passionate about health, working safely and protecting the environment.
“The in-depth review of our systems and HSE culture by the British Safety Council provides assurance to our stakeholders that Biffa is truly a leader when it comes to HSE management; especially as the waste industry is widely reported to be one of the most dangerous sectors to wrk in.”
